Went to Muzzleloading black powder match yesterday. Wasn’t any action shooting, just punching paper at 100yards, 50yards, and pistols at 25yards.
I learned that my Winchester 1873 made in 1893, and using .430 big lube boolit sitting on 35grains or so of black, with a way less then desirable bore, is still accurate at 100 yards. I just got to get rid of the bobbling in my hold.
Another shooter was using Triple Seven in his front stuffer. And after a few hours of shooting, it didn’t look any different then if he used smokeless. So I’m thinking of getting a pound of it and giving it a whirl in my 25.20. I’ve used real black in it, but the fouling is too much for such a small caliber. If it’s successful there, then my AR in .223 will be next. And from what I’ve read, cleanup is simply warm water, dry patches, then oil or whatever one might use as lube.
What was really cool, one guy had a brace of religion around his waist. Walker on the right, 3rd model Dragoon on the left. I was hoping to hear the Walker preachin’ the holy word, but no luck. The guy didn’t do any trigger time with them.
UPDATE: I’m told that Triple Seven runs 15% hotter than a full house load of real black. So that just might be enough to get the gas impingement system working.
UPDATE: Triple Seven cost 2/3rds more per pound than real black. Also, spoke with numerous Darksiders, and read reviews, the fouling of Triple Seven is actually just as bad as real black, and in some cases, worse.
*sigh*
